It is very common for men not to disclose that they feel depressed or anxious.

It is believed that one in eight men experience depression and anxiety — and the true figure may be higher.

It is far more common for men to go missing than women; there are more homeless men than women; and recorded substance misuse is higher among men who are struggling with depression.

Statistics show that up to three-quarters of deaths by suicide are men. Rates are particularly high in farming communities.

Men can also experience depression after their babies are born. There can be pressure to keep a stiff upper lip, to be the breadwinner and the broad shoulders of the household — particularly when financial responsibility feels overwhelming. How exhausting.

Confusion around sexuality, happiness in a relationship, finances or work can also become all-consuming.
